Green Tara Empowerment on June 20, 2014 – Spanish Language Retreat

DSC_0115Early in the morning Venerable Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche was already in the gompa beginning his preparations to offer us the empowerment for the practice of Green Tara. This process took him two hours while many of us accompanied him, reciting mantras or sitting in silent meditation.  For each of us this moment was very meaningful, as it offered us the opportunity to stabilize our minds and our motivation,  while completely opening ourselves and preparing for the experience that brought us here.

DSC_0164The empowerment had the objective of introducing us to the practice of Green Tara whose intention it is to assist us in overcoming our fears and suffering. In order to achieve this the first step was to receive the empowerment, the absolute power as offered by Green Tara, she with an enlightened mind, who holds the absolute space, also known as the absolute Mother. In the same sense in which we speak of Mother Earth, Tara is our Mother. She is awakened wisdom. She is our true nature which is our true mother. The true nature of Tara is Mother Prajnaparamita, the Mother of all buddhas. It is not important how powerful our own mind is, we need her help. And with this empowerment, what we request is Green Tara’s assistance and her power to find success on our spiritual path and to be of benefit to all sentient beings.

P1200635It is hard to put into words what we witnessed and experienced during the Green Tara empowerment, because it relates to a mental space, one that is subtle, personal and indeed profound. It involves our intimate connection to our teacher as well as the transformative energy of Arya Tara herself. Nonetheless, we will attempt to describe some aspects of what we lived and witnessed so that we can share it with you.

P1200506The ceremony took place during the better part of the morning. At the beginning of the ceremony, some of the participants took refuge vows for the very first time, and then our formal empowerment ceremony began. Bells and dorjes were placed on the long meditation tables reserved for monks and nuns, and large horns also lay vertically on these tables to be played during the ceremony. Close to the pillars in the gompa, two large drums revealed the force and intensity of what we would experience during the practice.

Rinpoche sat in complete concentration in order to confer upon us the empowerment. He focused on his main objective, the flourishing of this profound practice in each one of us. He offered us an uninterrupted transmission of knowledge through his sacred lineage since the historical Buddha. As a result of Rinpoche sharing with us his profound knowledge, we have  been filled with a sense of deep admiration, respect and emotion. Rinpoche has given us the gift of being authorized to do the complete practice of Green Tara with our bodies, speech and mind. We have committed ourselves to practice it on a regular basis with the intention of benefiting all sentient beings.

DSC_0177P1200634Tara is known for her ability to bestow blessings effectively and powerfully. In fact, she has already been of great assistance to us as we had to overcome all kinds of obstacles over many months in order to be able to attend this powerful retreat. We are profoundly grateful for this opportunity.

Now all that is left to do is to open our hearts, be completely present with the practice and be willing to let go and do what we came here to do, not because we are somehow special. There is only a consciousness of being together in a space and time that unites us in an extraordinary way. Our eyes are filled with tears of joy. Our hope is that with this empowerment, we will be able to be one with the mind of Arya Tara and be of profound benefit all sentient beings.
